Princess Diana reportedly suffered a lot of humiliation due to her failed marriage with Prince Charles.

Tina Brown claimed in her 2007 biography, “The Diana Chronicles,” that the Princess of Wales was “deeply ambivalent” about keeping her title. She tried, during several occasions, to persuade the Queen about retaining Her Royal Highness title.

The HRH title “has no constitutional meaning [but] it does denote a direct family connection to the Crown.” If Princess Diana had retained the HRH title, she would always be included in state events and be properly acknowledged as the future king’s mother.

However, without this title, Princess Diana would have to curtsy to the royals who bear titles, including her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. She also needed to bow down to Princess Michael, with whom she had an antagonistic relationship.

“Without the protection of HRH, Diana would be expected to bend the knee in the corridor of Kensington Palace every time she bumped into the Austrian neighbour she referred to as the U-Boat Commander – HRH Princess Michael of Kent,” Brown wrote.

In addition to the humiliation of curtsying to other royals, Princess Diana witnessed how Sarah Ferguson lost her HRH title following her divorce from Prince Andrew earlier that same year in May 1996. Prince William and Prince Harry’s mom noticed how the split and loss had affected the Duchess of York.

“[Diana] brooded on how Fergie’s prospects in the outside world were plummeting now it was clear her royal initials would be confiscated,” Brown continued. “Diana had a dread of descending into her sister-in-law’s world, leveraging her tiara to pay for her highlights. She wanted no part of such horrors.”

Princess Diana reportedly tried all she can to salvage her royal title, but the other side declined. She even appealed to Sir Robert Fellowes. Unfortunately, he also declined her request on behalf of the monarchy.

Although Princess Diana was no longer entitled to royal privileges, she was still allowed to use the HRH title unless he remarried. However, Prince William promised his mom that he would return her royal title to her when he becomes the new king.

Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell previously said that he believes the Duke of Cambridge will still fulfill this vow. In fact, Burrell thinks that Prince William’s first action when he takes the throne would be restoring his mother’s title.
