'Princess Diaries 3': Disney Reportedly Considering Sequel; Will Anne Hathaway Star?
Get ready to head back to Genovia. Disney is reportedly seriously considering rebooting the “Princess Diaries” franchise with a third installment. Now, the question remains: who will star in the film?
According to Vulture, “Princess Diaries 3” is still in it’s early stages and the film’s proposed plot is remaining under wraps. It seems likely, however, that “Princess Diaries” fans will see an entirely new storyline. MTV suggests the third film may be based off Meg Cabot’s most recent book, “Princess Diaries XI: Royal Wedding.” As you may recall, the initial film was based off a young adult novel of the same name penned by Cabot and released in 2000.
There are no definites on who will and will not be reprising their roles. Anne Hathaway, who starred in the first two films as Mia Thermopolis, has previously hinted that she will most likely be closing the door on that chapter of her acting career.
While it's unconfirmed if Hathaway will be returning to the film series, Tracking Board reports that the project will be produced by Debra Chase, who served as a producer on both the first and second film. She has also worked on famous films like “Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants.” It has not been announced who will direct.
The first “Princess Diaries” film was introduced in 2001. Hathaway starred alongside Julie Andrews, Mandy Moore, Hector Elizondo, Erik von Detten and more as a homely teen who discovers she’s royalty. With some serious styling and etiquette training, Hathway's character quickly went from ugly duckling to full on bombshell. Three years later, Disney followed up with a sequel, “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.” The second installment in the series followed Hathaway’s character as she prepared to be married off in order to assume Andrews’ character’s role as Queen of Genovia. Naturally, chaos ensues.
Disney has not confirmed whether they are or aren’t moving forward with production of “Princess Diaries 3,” but we’re crossing our fingers.
