Princess Margaret felt betrayed by her older sister Queen Elizabeth II following this devastating incident.

According to royal expert Angela Mollard in the “Royals” podcast, the Queen and her younger sister, Princess Margaret, were very close. However, their relationship was tested when Her Majesty, at a very young age, needed to make an “incredibly difficult decision.”

Mollard was referring to Princess Margaret’s relationship with divorcé Group Captain Peter Townsend. At the time, the royals were very strict when it comes to finding a partner and they were strongly against marrying divorced people.

“It must have been heartbreaking, and we saw how Margaret loved this man and wanted to marry him, but the public wouldn’t accept a marriage to a divorcé,” Mollard said.

At present, the royals have become lenient to this aspect of marriage. Queen Elizabeth II’s three children Prince Charles, Princess Anne and Prince Andrew have divorced their first spouses. Also, Prince Harry just married Meghan Markle, who is also a divorcée. However, the matter was a difficult issue back then.

“It is more commonplace and accepted [now], but heartbreaking at the time for the Queen to have to make the decision, and for Margaret to have to accept that decision,” Mollard added.

“And there was very much a cooling for number of years – Margaret felt she had been betrayed by her sister. And the Queen was, first and foremost, committed to country, it had to come before family. People at the time said she was devastated.”

When Princess Margaret announced her engagement to Anthony Armstrong-Jones, the public was shocked because they were not expecting it. According to Andrew Morton in his book “Andrew: The Playboy Prince,” many thought Armstrong-Jones was only in the palace for his profession as a photographer and not as Princess Margaret’s suitor.

Princess Margaret and Armstrong-Jones’ marriage didn’t last long. In 1976, Queen Elizabeth II’s sister was spotted in Mustique with a much younger man. Princess Margaret and 27-year-old Roddy Llewellyn’s photos “sent the press into a frenzy.” Shortly after, Princess Margaret and Armstrong-Jones got divorced.
