'Project Runway' Season 9 Winner Announced
Project Runway announced the Season 9 winner on the finale Oct. 27.
The winner of the cycle is Anya Ayoung-Chee.
Ayoung-Chee learned how to sew just four months before the competition. Her win, announced by Ms. Heidi Klum, came as a glorious surprise.
Oh my God, I won 'Project Runway!' she exclaimed. Like... what? she said laughing. I think deep down inside I do want to scream. Never in a million years did I think I'd even have a chance.
Ayoung-Chee competed in the finals against Josh McKinley, who was known for his in-your-face styles; Viktor Luna, who was known for his sophisticated looks; and Kimberly Goldson, who was known for her urban aesthetic.
But, in the end Ayoung-Chee beat them all.
I think all four of us were on an even playing field. And I think we all knew that it was anybody's game, said the Trinidadian, humbly.
Ayoung-Chee was known for her tribal, modern styles, mixing bold prints with edgy cuts.
It's an absolute turning point in my life, she said.
As a young girl, Ayoung-Chee always had an interest in art and design. During her high school and college years she gained experience in graphic and interior design.
Ayoung-Chee is a former Miss Universe 2008 from Trinidad. The 29-year-old beauty is the only daughter of a family of eight.
Josh McKinley was another fan favorite who gained immense popularity. Ayoung-Chee was most upset about having to compete against him in the end.
As the winner, Ayoung-Chee took home $100,000 from L'Oréal Paris to start her own line, a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine, a $50,000 technology suite by HP and the opportunity to design and sell an exclusive collection on Piperlime.com. Her model will appear in her editorial spread for Marie Claire and receive $25,000 from L'Oréal Studio Secrets Professional.
