- The PlayStation 5 may come out with a backward compatibility feature, reports said
The PlayStation 4 remains the main game console offering for Sony, but one thing that the game console has been struggling to provide is backward compatibility. Past PS games played on the PS3, PS2 and the original PS can no longer be used, some of which gamers still want to enjoy. But thanks to a hacker, a working emulator could be the start of something big.
For gamers, there are emulators available for the PC tied to past PlayStation games. But most know the difference when it comes to playing the game. Thanks to the 2019 MediEvil remake, PS1 games can now be played on the PlayStation 4.
According to SP1ST, some PS4 hackers were able to use the 2019 MediEvil Remake to make PS1 emulators work on the PlayStation 4. Sony's Bug Bounty gave access to some hackers to different firmware updates. Among them, the 6.72 firmware update was exploitable.
Hackers were able to extract a file from the MediEvil Remake which houses the PS1 emulator. They found a way to get it running on the PS4, and some players have reportedly started to test out the emulators themselves.
This development should be good news for gamers who have been longing to get a working emulator for the PS4. But as mentioned, this is only a small step toward that direction.
The hack is not free from issues. Basic functionalities and some titles do not load past the menu screens. Others even experience screen resolution problems.
Hence, the emulator needs further tweaking. Users have joined the fray, hoping that it can finally be the solution they need to play old games from old PS game consoles. For now, this is technically a work in progress with no promises tied to it.
Looking ahead, what the PS 4 may have failed to bring could be present once the PlayStation 5 comes out. There are claims that the PS5 will come with a backward compatibility option, though it was not mentioned how far back it will cover.
For now, the best to expect is that backward compatibility will cover only PS4 games. Hence, all PS3, PS2 and PS game console owners can hope for is to see that emulator gain some ground.
