iPhone 6 Weekend Sales: How Does Apple's New Smartphone Compare To Other Huge Product Launches?
On Monday, Apple announced that it broke its own record for opening-weekend sales, with more than 10 million iPhone units sold, but how does that compare to other major product launches?
“Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend, and we couldn’t be happier,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a public statement. “We would like to thank all of our customers for making this our best launch ever, shattering all previous sell-through records by a large margin,” he said.
Fill in a different product name in that quote and you could be talking about the PS4 or the Galaxy S4. Here are some other major product launches in recent years and how they've performed:
Samsung Galaxy
In 2013, it took a month for Samsung’s Galaxy S4 to sell 10 million units after moving just 4 million in its opening weekend.
“The Galaxy S4 sets a new record for Samsung, generating sales quicker than any of its predecessors,” the Korean electronics manufacturer said at the time, adding an estimate that phones were selling at a rate of four units per second.
Sony PlayStation
When Sony’s 32-bit gaming system first went on sale in Japan, it sold 200,000 units in the first 30 days. During the 2013 holiday season, the PS4 sold 2.1 million units in its first two weeks, contributing to the highest first-month sales of any gaming console, as Mashable reported, topping sales of rival Microsoft's Xbox One.
Apple iPad
In April 2010, Apple sold 300,000 iPads within the first two days of launch. By 2013, various versions of the iPad had captured 40 percent of the tablet market, according to market research firm IDC. That year, analysts speculated that the fifth-generation iPad Air would top 3 million in sales during its first weekend.
Other iPhones
When the first-edition iPhone launched in 2007 it sold 700,000 units in its first two days, as Mashable reported. Five years later, the The iPhone 4S sold more than 4 million units on its first weekend, doubling the rate of iPhone 4, which sold just 1.7 million.
Last year, Apple sold 9 million iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models within the first three days, including orders that had not yet shipped. Though CEO Tim Cook lauded the “record-breaking” statistics, calling it “the best iPhone launch yet,” Apple stock actually fell on the news, since the market had expected between 8 and 10 million units sold, as Forbes reported.
