Queen Elizabeth II Was ‘Upset’ With Princess Diana For This Reason
The relationship Princess Diana had with members of the royal family during her marriage to Prince Charles has often been seen as fraught. Now, it appears that one incident, in particular, could have been the catalyst for any tensions she had with Queen Elizabeth II.
In the 2010 book, “William and Harry,” by royal expert Katie Nicholls, it was revealed that Princess Diana broke tradition when it came to the royal family spending the New Years holidays at the Queen’s Balmoral estate.
In the book, Nicholls wrote that traditionally, the family all stayed in the main house at Balmoral together, but Princess Diana insisted on moving into Craigowan Lodge instead because she felt suffocated with all the people there.
“Diana, who privately complained to Charles that she felt suffocated at Balmoral, had needed some space,” Nicholls wrote. “When Diana had insisted on moving out of the main house into Craigowan Lodge a mile away the Queen had been crestfallen.”
According to Nicholls, the Queen’s cousin, Lady Elizabeth Anson, said “The Queen was so upset when Diana and the boys moved to the lodge. She said, ‘Why did they have to move? There are so many corridors for them to race down here and it’s so quiet now they have gone.’”
Princess Diana and Prince Charles divorced in 1996. She died in a car accident in Paris one year later.
