Queen Elizabeth II’s Rare Throwback Video As A Teenager Surfaces
A rare footage of Queen Elizabeth II as a teenager has just surfaced online.
In the video, the queen was with her parents, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and George VI, as well as her younger sister, Princess Margaret. The family of four was seen walking on the field with their adorable dog. The video was taken right before the World War II broke out.
The video was taken in 1939 when Queen Elizabeth II was only 13 years old, and her younger sister was 8 years old. Three years earlier, the then teen queen learned that she will soon become the queen after her uncle Edward VIII decided to marry his mistress, Wallis Simpson.
Edward VIII decided to step down from his role as future king so he could marry the love of his life. This pushed George VI into the spotlight, and it also secured Queen Elizabeth II’s position as the queen. At the age of 21, she vowed to stay loyal and to protect her country at all times.
Months after the video was taken, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain declared war on Nazi Germany in a broadcast from the Cabinet Room at 10 Downing Street.
“This morning the British ambassador in Berlin, Neville Henderson, handed the German government a final note stating that unless we heard from them by 11 o’clock, that they were prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Poland, that a state of war would exist between us. I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and consequently this country is at war with Germany,” he said.
Meanwhile, the monarch became the queen when she was just 25 years old. She also happens to be the longest-running monarch in British history. She became queen on Feb. 6, 1952, but was only official crowned on June 2, 1953. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are parents to Prince Charles, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Princess Anne.
Last year, concerns over the queen’s health surfaced after the Kensington Palace announced that she has been suffering from heavy cold. But 2017 and 2018 are proving to be healthier years for the monarch.
