Queen Elizabeth Snub: 6 Royals Who Rejected Titles, From Princess Anne To Prince Harry
KEY POINTS
- Queen Elizabeth II offered six royals particular titles, but they rejected it
- Princess Anne rejected royal titles to give her children a normal life as possible
- Prince Harry and Meghan Markle dropped their royal title after deciding to step back from their royal roles
Queen Elizabeth II offered royal titles to Princess Anne, Prince Harry and Prince Edward, but they rejected it.
The Queen usually offers new titles to the members of the Firm as a present for weddings, birthdays or other milestones. However, there were instances when the members rejected the monarch’s good will.
Here are the six royals who declined the titles the Queen offered to them, according to Express.
Princess Anne and Mark Phillips
The Queen and Prince Phillips only daughter, Princess Anne, rejected the title offered to her by the monarch when she married Mark Phillips in 1973. Also, Phillips was offered an Earldom by his royal mother-in-law. However, he also rejected it.
According to royal experts, Princess Anne and Phillips didn’t want a royal title, so their kids won’t inherit it because they wanted their children to live a normal life as possible.
Princess Anne and Phillips’ kids Peter and Zara grew up away from the royal spotlight unlike their cousins Prince William, Prince Harry, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie. They also enjoy a greater degree of freedom.
“I’m very lucky that both my parents decided to not use the title and we grew up and did all the things that gave us the opportunity to do,” Zara said of their upbringing.
Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Sussex
Prince Edward became the Earl of Wessex while his wife, Sophie, became the Countess of Wessex after their wedding. However, it wasn’t the original title the Queen wanted for them.
Queen Elizabeth II reportedly offered her youngest son a dukedom but he rejected it. Instead, he wanted to be the Earl of Wessex because he loved the character Lord Wessex from the film “Shakespeare in Love.” Thus, the Queen gave him the title Earl of Wessex.
Since Prince Edward is not a duke, his children Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn were styled as the children of an Earl and not prince of princess unlike Prince William and Kate Middleton’s kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were made the Duke and Duchess of Sussex when they got married on May 19, 2018. However, earlier this year, the couple announced that they were stepping back from their royal duties.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were told that they couldn’t use their royal titles if they wanted to be financially independent. Several were accusing Prince Harry and Markle of monetizing the royal family when they renounced their title and still used their Sussex Royal brand.
So, Prince Harry and Markle decided to drop their HRH title. At present, the couple is living in a secluded place in the United States.
