When Kate Middleton married Prince William in 2011, the royal family appeared to welcome their newest member. However, Queen Elizabeth reportedly had “slight reservations” about the couple’s relationship while they were dating.

William and Kate’s romance is believed to have begun in 2003 while attending the University of St Andrews. In 2007, the couple briefly split, and the hiccup in their relationship left Elizabeth with doubts about their future.

According to the Express.co.uk, Prince William told Queen Elizabeth that he wasn’t sure about his relationship with Kate. After his confession, the monarch wasn’t eager to meet her grandson’s girlfriend and reportedly “steered clear” of Kate.

A year before William and Kate’s split, the Sunday Express reported that Queen Elizabeth warned the Duke of Cambridge about jumping into a marriage with Kate.

At the time, she felt “enough was enough” when it came to divorces in the royal family. The monarch advised her grandson to make sure he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Kate.

“The Queen is the head of the Church, and so from a point of principle, she is opposed to royal divorces. However, she has witnessed the divorces, not just of her sister Princess Margaret, but also, those of her three eldest children,” a palace aide told the outlet.

“She now feels, to put it bluntly, that enough is enough. She does not want to name names, but she is adamant that there are going to be no further royal divorces during her reign. The concept of divorce goes against the Queen’s whole upbringing, which is about duty and about soldiering on in the face of adversity.”

Due to her thoughts about marriage, Queen Elizabeth warned Prince William and Prince Harry to be sure about their choice of brides. “Both Princes William and Harry have been in no doubt that when they marry, it’s for keeps,” the insider shared.

William appeared to take Queen Elizabeth’s words to heart and didn’t propose to Kate until 2010. The couple was married the following year and are now parents to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
