KEY POINTS

- She said Epstein and Maxwell directed her to have sex with Prince Andrew in 2001
- The British royal has previously said he has no recollection of meeting Giuffre
An alleged victim of the late Jeffrey Epstein on Monday accused Queen Elizabeth II’s son, Prince Andrew of Britain, of sexually abusing her when she was under the age of 18.
Lawyers for Virginia Roberts Giuffre filed a lawsuit at a New York federal court where they accused the Duke of York of sexually abusing her in several locations in 2001 when she was just 17.
"I am holding Prince Andrew accountable for what he did to me," Giuffre said in a statement, as reported by NPR. "The powerful and rich are not exempt from being held responsible for their actions. I hope that other victims will see that it is possible not to live in silence and fear, but to reclaim one's life by speaking out and demanding justice.
"As a mother and a wife, my family comes first — and I know that this action will subject me to further attacks by Prince Andrew and his surrogates — but I knew if I did not pursue this action, I would be letting them and victims everywhere down,” she added.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages from Prince Andrew. It comes just days before a New York state law that allows childhood sexual abuse victims to file civil claims expires.
Giuffre, now 38, first accused the British royal of sexual abuse in a case against Epstein in 2014. In the court filings, she said the late sex offender and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, directed her to have sex with Prince Andrew on three separate occasions in 2001, including “one orgy” with approximately eight other young girls on Epstein’s private island in the Caribbean, ABC News reported.
Prince Andrew denied the allegations during an interview on BBC Newsnight in late 2019, noting that he has “no recollection” of meeting Giuffre in 2001.
“I can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened,” Andrew said, according to The Guardian.
Giuffre’s most recent court filing contains a photograph of her standing beside Andrew with his arm around her waist. The photograph, which the British royal said might have been doctored, was allegedly taken by Epstein in a London home in 2001.
