National Geographic on Wednesday released its top 35 travel destinations list for 2023, revealing the choices were inspired by "sustainability" and "respect."

"Because when you are awed by something, you treat it with respect. And that spirit is something we want to encourage with this list," Amy Alipio, senior editor for National Geographic Travel, noted in an interview with CNN on Wednesday.

"It's about broadening the focus on the people striving for sustainable destinations and the various ways that manifests, from making travel more accessible to supporting local businesses," she added.

According to a 2023 travel predictions report from American Automobile Association released earlier this month, trends show people plan to travel more overall next year and that their "appetite for international travel has returned."

The list has five different themed categories including, "adventure, culture, nature, family and community."

Twenty-five of the locations were picked by the global editors of National Geographic Traveler while 10 were chosen from the U.K. edition.
