One month after Meghan Markle’s 2018 royal wedding to Prince Harry, a report surfaced that the reigning British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, had been noticeably nurturing towards the newfound Duchess of Sussex.

In June 2018, Express, noting how doting the queen was to Markle during an official royal outing to Cheshire, published a report stating that the Queen likely wanted to “avoid history repeating itself” when it comes to Meghan.

“This is the sort of treatment [Princess] Diana never had. She was never shown the ropes,” royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams explained to the outlet at the time. “Meghan is being nurtured in a totally different way.”

The outlet paid mention to “‘Meghan-mania” and said it was likely that the Queen, who received some criticism following Princess Diana’s death in 1997, “wants to make sure Meghan knows she’s welcome, and make sure she knows how to handle this new life.”

While the outlet speculated the Queen’s treatment of Markle could “could lie in history,” Fitzwilliams said it was clear the two royals also have a strong connection.

“The chemistry seems very genuine between Meghan and the Queen,” Fitzwilliams said. “It makes sense. The Queen can see it’s for the good of the Royal Family.”
