  • The show only features three out of the five finished fights in the manga

The Netflix adaptation for the acclaimed fighting tournament manga “Record Of Ragnarok” was met with strong flak from the online community due to its disappointing animation quality and some questionable changes from the manga’s actual panels.

Disappointed manga fans stormed Twitter with a barrage of frustrated messages toward the anime adaptation’s slide show-like animations, which many consider to be unacceptable for a series that’s dedicated to epic battles between powerful characters.

Those who watched the Netflix anime adaptation complained about the treatment of the fights; some of the scenes in “Record Of Ragnarok’s” had awkward cuts and uncomfortable transitions, and most scenes failed to properly articulate the brutality of the fights that fans came to expect.

Despite the outrage from fans, there were still some viewers who found the anime to be enjoyable. One Redditor said they liked the impressive voice acting, detailed art style and emotional soundtracks. Others noted that the show got many things right, especially the characters.

Graphinica, the animation studio behind the “Record Of Ragnarok” anime, is no stranger to the industry. They previously worked on “Juuni Taisen,” another action series involving a martial arts tournament, as well as “Hellsing Ultimate” back in 2006. Fans of the studios’ previous worked suspected that “Record Of Ragnarok’s” animation quality was affected by animator crunch due to tight deadlines.

“Record Of Ragnarok” (or “Shuumatsu No Valkyrie” in Japanese) is a seinen action manga series where the old gods of mythological pantheons and historical figures from mankind’s history engage each other in duels to the death in a tournament that will decide the fate of humanity.

Each side will send one representative to fight in a duel with their very souls on the line; death will result in their complete eradication from existence. Should the fighters of humanity lose, the entire human race will be wiped out to allow new life to flourish on Earth.

The anime adaptation covers the first three matches of the manga: Lu Bu vs. Thor, Adam vs. Zeus and Sasaki Kojiro vs. Poseidon. The manga currently has five finished fights while the sixth match is currently ongoing.
