KEY POINTS

  • The Red Sox will be busy this offseason with several key players expected to test free agency
  • Devers is reportedly looking for a 10-year deal worth $300 million
  • Aaron Judge could be a target for the Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox may have to end up looking for another third baseman in the MLB offseason following reports they have failed to come to terms with Rafael Devers.

The one-time World Series champion was reportedly dangled a long-term contract extension, but talks allegedly fell apart according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

The outlet claimed that the Red Sox offered more than $200 million to the two-time All-Star.

However, Devers is reportedly seeking a new deal worth $300 million that spans for at least 10 years.

It was also added that Boston had dangled something similar to what first baseman Matt Olson got from the Atlanta Braves.

The two-time Golden Glove award winner got an eight-year deal with the Braves that was worth about $168 million.

The development is seen as a blow to the efforts of the Red Sox to retain Defers.

The 2021 Silver Slugger award recipient is set to hit free agency after the 2023 MLB season.

Defers is coming off a good 2022 season, registering 27 home runs, 88 RBIs, and a .879 OPS across 141 games.

But the personnel problems of the Red Sox extend beyond Defers with several other players expected to test the free-agent market.

Among those names include shortstop Xander Bogaerts and designated hitter J.D. Martinez.

The Red Sox finished last in the American League East this season, raising questions about the future of the team.

For them to restore order, Boston may need to make a huge splash in the offseason to turn their fortunes around.

One name that is reportedly on their radar is Aaron Judge.

There is no question that the four-time All-Star looms as one of the most coveted but expensive free agents this winter.

But acquiring him could resolve some of the impending problems the Red Sox have right now, particularly the ones on their way out.

Adding Judge will not be easy as the New York Yankees are expected to exhaust all means to retain the veteran outfielder's services.

Also lurking in the background are the Los Angeles Dodgers, a team that could lure Judge with some help from Mookie Betts.

However, the Dodgers may only be able to accommodate Judge if players like Trea Turner, Justin Turner, Craig Kimbrel and Joey Gallo leave as free agents, giving the ballclub roughly $100 million in salary space to pull off a potential trade.
