Reese Witherspoon Says It’s A ‘Good Time’ For ‘Legally Blonde 3’; Could Elle Woods Be President?
It’s been 13 years since Reese Witherspoon graced the big screen as Elle Woods in the “Legally Blonde” series, but the actress believes the time is right for a third “Legally Blonde” film (we’ll forget the direct-to-DVD sequel, “Legally Blondes,” ever happened).
Speaking with E! News at the Elle Women in Television dinner, Witherspoon revealed that she has thought about a sequel and is waiting for someone to come up with an idea for the movie. “We’ve thought about it,” Witherspoon said. “I need somebody really clever to come up with a great idea and we’ll do it.”
With everything going in politics today, Witherspoon believes women need positivity right now. “I do think it’s a good time to do it,” she said. “I think women need that kind of positivity right now.”
The actress has previously discussed the idea of a sequel before, saying it would be a good idea to have Elle Woods as a Supreme Court justice or as someone who runs for office.
After the ending in “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde,” which featured Witherspoon’s character winking as she drove past the White House, it wouldn’t be a stretch to believe a sequel would involve Elle Woods as the President of the United States.
Although Witherspoon believes women need positivity, she still thinks it’s a “great privilege” to be a woman in the United States. “We have many rights and freedoms that a lot of women don’t have all over the world. I try to celebrate that.”
“I try to live that to its utmost, particularly the freedom of speech, being able to express myself, create shows like this to show how important women are in our world,” she added. “That’s what I try to focus on.”
While fans now wait for the confirmation of a “Legally Blonde” sequel, Witherspoon’s latest project, “Big Little Lies,” premieres on HBO on Feb. 19. The dramedy is based on the Liane Moriarty best-selling novel of the same name. The series is produced by Witherspoon who also stars in it.
