Renee Zellweger Exposes Colin Firth, Patrick Dempsey's Bromance In ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’
In the new film “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy and Patrick Dempsey’s Jack Qwant are fierce rivals for the affections of Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger). But when the cameras stop rolling, Zellweger said that the two actors actually have an intense “bromance” and it is hard to come in between them.
“They are best friends! Colin likes to joke that he can see [their] spin-off from this film,” Zellweger laughingly said during a Facebook Live interview.
The actress added that she and director Sharon Maguire were always the “third wheels” whenever Firth and Dempsey are together. Maguire also said that the two have a shared interest in gadgets, racing and theater, so they will always hole up in a corner and talk about these things.
Meanwhile, Maguire said that it was very difficult for Bridget to choose between Mark and Jack because they are both “kind of nice guys.” Dempsey is “playing the all-American dream guy” because Jack is “very much the new world,” and in comparison, Firth’s “Mr. Darcy is still constipated and repressed and the old world.”
Dempsey earlier told WSVN that he had quite a challenging role to fill because audiences are already acquainted with Bridget and Mark, so they might be wary of his newcomer.
“For me, Jack was the least defined. ‘Who is he’ and ‘why is he here?’ ‘How does he add value?’ Some questions you could answer, and some you just sort of go, ‘She’s Bridget, you go with it,’” he said.
But Firth thinks Dempsey did a fantastic job with the role. “I think you helped develop him a lot,” he told his co-star, while Zellweger quipped: “I was gonna say the same thing!”
Whoever Bridget ends up choosing between the two men, she is one lucky girl. But if the movie soundtrack — Ellie Goulding’s “Still Falling For You” — is any indication, it seems like Bridget will still choose her old flame Mark Darcy, according to Bustle.
“Bridget Jones’s Baby” will be released on Sept. 16 by Universal Pictures.
