Rescuers Find Dog That Survived Under Rubble For Three Weeks Following Hurricane Dorian
A month following the devastation hurricane Dorian meted on the island of Bahamas; rescuers found a dog alive under the rubble.
The dog, aptly named ‘Miracle’, was trapped under a collapsed building in Marsh Harbour after the hurricane came ashore in September at wind speeds of 165 miles per hour. Hurricane Dorian struck the island as a category five storm in September and killed 50 people. Several others are still missing.
The fact the dog was not crushed under the rubble and managed to survive for that long is probably why it got its name.
Big Dog Ranch Rescue is an animal rescue service based in Loxahatchee Groves, Florida, and has saved at least 138 dogs during the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
When the crews got information concerning the potential whereabouts of the dog on Friday, they alerted Simmons on the phone, and requested a plane that got there within the hour.
The team at the Big Dog Ranch Rescue used a drone to detect heat signatures in the debris. When they saw something, rescuers rushed and uncovered the rubble to find a malnourished dog.
It was assumed the only way the dog could have survived for that long was by drinking the rainwater that found its way between the debris.
The veterinarian gave ‘Miracle’ fluids to get it to the point where it could eat before it was cleared to head back to the United States. It is currently receiving medical treatment, food, and water and is expected to make a full recovery.
Lauree Simmons, the founder of Big Dog Ranch Rescue organization, claimed it was incredible they were able to find the dog alive after being trapped for three weeks. There was another dog that was also trapped alongside the pooch, but it was not as lucky.
Simmons added they hope they will be able to find the dog’s owners, but if not, they should be able to allocate it to a home.
He also urged people to be mindful the crisis is not over, and other animals are probably hiding because they are scared of the debris clearing bulldozers. These are very loud.
The animal rescue cases following Hurricane Dorian set a precedent for the use of tech such as drones and special recovery teams to locate more animals trapped under the debris in Marsh Harbor.
Other rescue initiatives will see the use of these drones to retrieve trapped and injured people following natural disasters.
