Researcher says 1,284 Gazans died in latest conflict
Human rights researcher; Yasser Abdel Ghafar had the daunting task of interviewing Gaza residents and compiling a list of the dead or wounded Gazans in the Israeli offensive which began in late December and ended Tuesday.
Ghafar's work is being done on behalf of the Palestinian Center for Human Rights to count the casualties of the 23-day war.
The final tally was released by the group on Wednesday with 1,284 Gazans dead and 4,336 wounded of which the majority were civilians.
Israel has accused Hamas of inflating the civilian casualties, saying it has the names of more than 700 Hamas militants killed in the fighting.
The two sides don't agree on the death toll, particularly the ratio of combatants and civilians.
Lists of the details of the deceased are being prepared by the Palestinian Center for Human Rights and a final list is expected to be presented soon.
