KEY POINTS
- "Riverdale" Season 5 premiere is set for January 20, 2021
- Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa dropped a key promotional art on Twitter
- The upcoming season features a massive seven-year time jump
"Riverdale" Season 5 is fast approaching and fans are assured that it continues to be spooky as ever. Teasers and spoilers for the upcoming installment are rolling out, suggesting the return of the dead.
Series creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa took dropped a bomb of a spoiler on Twitter last Tuesday. The showrunner shared a new poster for the fifth season of the series, suggesting a creepy storyline. In the said poster, one can see a monstrous hand coming out of what appears to be Sweetwater River, the place where Jason Blossom died on the Fourth of July in the show's premiere episode.
Many outlets are speculating that Aguirre-Sacasa is teasing the return of a dead character or characters through his recent post.
"Nothing stays buried forever... #Riverdale Season Five coming soon," the caption read. It was accompanied by tons of emojis, including a broken heart, an engagement ring, keys and a rainbow.
While there is no news yet about which character is rising from the dead, fans will agree that there are a lot of interesting options out there for the makers of the show. "Riverdale" Season 5, starring Cole Sprouse, Lili Reinhart and KJ Apa, is scheduled for its two-part premiere next year which will tie-in with the Season 4 storyline.
After shutting down the show prematurely in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the teen drama series suffered a delay in the production of its remaining episodes. Season 4's remaining three episodes, featuring prom and graduation, will now serve as Season 5 opener.
"We had written episodes 20, 21, and 22 and when we talked about season 5 and some of the big events like prom and graduation, it would feel like a cheat if we somehow didn't do those. So we're essentially starting the season with the last three episodes of season 4, and partly because they're dynamite episodes. I mean big, big, big changes happen. We are continuing the mystery and the relationship drama straight into season 5," Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly in a previous interview.
The prom will be followed by the show's biggest time jump ever. Reinhart, who plays the role of Betty Cooper, previously confirmed that the show would make a seven-year time jump into the future.
The new season will return in a whole new way, whereby the main cast members will be pulled back together for the murder mystery of Mr. Honey, their school principal. Fans would recall that the Season 4 finale ended with a cliffhanger showcasing the brutal death of Mr. Honey in the hands of a group of people wearing masks.
Titled "Chapter Seventy-Seven: Climax," "Riverdale" Season 5, Episode 1 airs on January 20, 2021, on The CW.
