Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese have been part of the movie industry for more than four decades now and they are responsible for giving some of the greatest hits of all time. The relationship between De Niro and Scorsese is not a secret but the “Raging Bull” actor is now opening up on the specific details of their strong bond.
Speaking in an interview with People, the 76-year-old actor revealed that his friendship with Scorsese started in the early ‘70s with the movie “Mean Streets” and considers himself lucky that he got to know such an esteemed filmmaker.
The superstar further stated that his life would be incomplete with the “Departed” helmer.
“I consider myself lucky to have that long of a relationship with him. I cannot imagine my life without it,” De Niro said.
Their latest venture together, Netflix’s “The Irishman,” has turned out to be one of the best works from the pair in recent times. While discussing the movie, the “Intern” star noted that the film holds a special place in everyone’s heart. People who were involved in the movie had so much fun while doing this project.
The actor also explained that Scorsese is very particular about the “actors” he wants to cast in his movies.
“Doing this film was so special for all of us no matter what happened. The good reception is the icing on the cake. Marty is very sensitive about people and actors. He takes what actors give him and uses it. Directors have to be well-rounded in many facets of life. He is really great,” De Niro said.
The dynamic duo has worked in nine films together starting with 1973’s “Mean Streets.” The pair got back in “Taxi Driver” in 1976 and “New York, New York” in 1977. In 1980, they collaborated for their biggest project ever, “Raging Bull.” The movie was a huge success and De Niro won the Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role for the movie. Scorsese was also nominated for Best Director.
The other films they collaborated on were “Goodfellas,” “The King Of Comedy,” “Cape Fear,” “Casino,” and a short-film named “The Audition.”
In related news, their newest collaboration “The Irishman” has been nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and a Best Director nod for Scorsese. This is Scorsese’s ninth nomination in the Directing category which makes him the most-nominated living director in the history of Oscars.
The film is also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Visual Effects, Costume Design, Production Design and Editing. De Niro’s co-stars, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci have both been nominated in the Supporting Actor category.
