- "The Irishmn" and "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" recieved 10 nominations each
- Joaquin Phoenix and Saoirse Ronan are featured in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories
Todd Phillips’ blockbuster hit “Joker” is creating all the right noises before the nominees of the Academy Awards are announced later this month. The movie is leading the pack with a staggering 13 nominations at the 2020 British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards, leaving behind “The Irishman” and “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” that received 10 nods each.
According to the organization, the film starring Joaquin Phoenix in the lead has been nominated in almost all the major categories, including Best Picture. In the category, the movie will face stiff competition from films like “1917,” “The Irishman,” “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” and “Parasite.”
After being adjudged Best Actor at the recently held Golden Globes, Phoenix will be up for the same award at the star-studded ceremony. Adam Driver is also one of the frontrunners to receive the trophy for his stellar work in Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story.” Other actors included in the category are Leonardo DiCaprio (“Once Upon A Time In Hollywood”), Jonathan Pryce (“The Two Popes”) and Taron Egerton (“Rocketman”).
Other notable nods for the movie include a Best Director nom for Phillips, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Editing, and Original Score. Hildur Guðnadóttir already won a Golden Globe in the Original Score category this past weekend.
Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese’s epic crime drama was a close second in the nominations list. The Netflix film has received 10 noms, including a Best Director nod for Scorsese. In acting categories, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci have both been nominated for the Best Supporting Actor trophy.
Quentin Tarantino’s comedy-drama “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” garnered the same amount of nominations as “The Irishman.” Going up for 10 accolades, Tarantino will battle it out against the likes of Scorsese, Phillips, Sam Mendes and Bong Joon-Ho in the Directing category. Brad Pitt, who recently won a Golden Globe for the film, will be up for Best Supporting Actor once again at the awards ceremony.
On the other hand, Saoirse Ronan will be hoping for a win in the Leading Actress category for her extraordinary acting skills in Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women.” This is Ronan’s fifth Best Actress nomination at the BAFTAs. Surprisingly, she is yet to win her first award in the category.
Other female stars include names like Scarlett Johansson (“Marriage Story”), Charlize Theron (“Bombshell”), Jessi Buckley (“Wild Rose”) and Golden Globe Award winner Renee Zellweger (“Judy”).
In the Supporting Actress category, all eyes are on Laura Dern (“Marriage Story”) and Florence Pugh (“Little Women”) since they are considered to be frontrunners for the award. Margot Robbie is the only actress to be nominated for two films, “Bombshell” and “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.”
