The breakdown of a rollercoaster in the U.K. left terrified riders, including children, dangling 20 feet in the air for around 90 minutes before they were rescued.

The horrifying incident occurred at a theme park called Pleasureland in Merseyside, northwestern England, when the "Rocket coaster" carrying 19 people abruptly stopped in the middle of the ride Saturday, NY Post reported.

As the ride came to a halt on a bend, the passengers remained trapped in their seats, and some of them were even suspended in the air. The staff at the theme park eventually managed to free them using a cherry picker.

One of the rescued passengers, a young girl, had lost consciousness and was rushed to a hospital. The paramedics who arrived at the scene gave precautionary checks for 17 of the passengers, reports said.

However, there were eyewitnesses who revealed that the passengers were stuck for a long time before they were safely rescued.

"We noticed the ride had stopped and they were stuck on an angle. I kept looking to check if they were still there. We went on three other rides, and they had quite long queues and went for lunch, and we came back and they were still stuck there," said Kie Bridgeman, one of the visitors at the park on the day of the incident, as reported by Manchester Evening News.

"They were stuck there for ages. I can't imagine what the parents felt like being stuck with their kids, it must've been so scary with it on its side," Bridgeman added.

Meanwhile, Pleasureland theme park issued a statement apologizing for the nightmarish ordeal, but also added that there was no risk to any of the riders' lives in the incident. "The ride did exactly what its safety settings are programmed to do and stopped on detecting a fault," the statement read.

"Our immediate priority was looking after everyone's safe removal from the ride. Senior management and maintenance team members are today continuing a thorough investigation into carriages stopping on the park's Rocket Coaster yesterday morning. All routine maintenance checks had been carried out," the statement from the theme park read.
