  • Fed injured his groin and lower back in his quarterfinal match against Tennys Sandgren

Have we seen the last of Roger Federer?

The Swiss legend lost to Novak Djokovic in three straight sets at the semi-finals of the 2020 Australian Open, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3 and not many people know that he is playing through an injury.

Federer, the third-ranked player in the world, suffered groin and lower back injury during his quarterfinal match against Tennys Sandgren, winning the match in five sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-7, 3-6. The 38-year old star even skipped practice ahead of his match against world number 2 Djokovic, in hopes of recovering from his injury, though showed during the semifinal showdown.

"Well, I thought I was going to make it, to be honest," said Federer. "I went for a scan that same night, was all right. After that, we didn't push it. I didn't practice. I took a day off the next day.”

Turning 39 in August, it appears that the chances of getting another grand slam is getting slimmer. Limping as he walked out of Rod Laver Arena, the last time Fed won his grand slam in only time will tell if father time has already caught up with Fed as he’s not confirmed his participation for the tournament’s 2021 edition.

"No idea. Same as last year. You never know what the future holds. But especially my age, you don't know,” said the winner of 20 Major victories. "I'm confident. I'm happy how I'm feeling, to be honest. I got through a good, nice training block. No plans to retire.”

"From that standpoint, we'll see how the year goes, how everything is with the family. We'll go from there. Of course, I hope to be back."

Right now, the focus is to rest and hope that the injury heals fast as he prepares for an exhibition match with top-ranked Rafael Nadal next month for Match for Africa.
