A city in Ukraine's Kyiv region suffered more than $250 million worth of damage due to Russia's invasion, according to a report.
Actions carried out by Russian forces in the war resulted in the northern city of Hostomel suffering damage worth more than 9.5 billion hryvnias, or approximately $258.7 million, the Rebuild Ukraine initiative claimed, citing a report by the Kyiv School of Economics.
The damage caused to Hostomel's industry was worth 5.4 billion hryvnias ($147 million), while residential and social infrastructure sustained 3.3 billion hryvnias ($89.8 million) and 842 million hryvnias ($22.9 million) worth of damage, respectively, after the city was shelled and subjected to aerial bombing.
More than 4,000 residential buildings, 318 industrial facilities and 181 social infrastructure facilities in the city got destroyed since Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, a report by Pravda said.
At least 4,553 of Hostomel's buildings, which accounted for 40% of the city's total, sustained some form of damage as well.
Among those damaged buildings, 12% have been completely destroyed, while another 7.9% sustained significant damage.
In total, the ongoing conflict has damaged 432,700 square meters (4,650 square feet) worth of private houses, 429,500 square meters (4,617 square feet) of apartment buildings and 97,100 square meters (1,044 square feet) of outbuildings.
Hostomel, which had a pre-war population of 17,000, made headlines at the start of the invasion when Russia's Airborne Forces attempted to capture the city's airport.
At the time, Antonov Airport, named after Ukrainian aircraft manufacturer Antonov, housed the An-225, the heaviest aircraft ever built. The plane was destroyed in its hangar during the ensuing battle for the airport, presumably through Russian shelling and artillery.
While Russian forces were able to capture Antonov Airport, it became too damaged to be used as a functional airstrip. Ukrainian resistance also thwarted Russia's goal to quickly take over Ukraine's capital, Kyiv.
Russian forces used Hostomel as a forward operating base to attack Kyiv during the city's occupation. They ended up retreating from the Kyiv region by late March, and the Ukrainians regained control of Antonov Airport on April 2.
At least four hundred people were reported missing following Russia's 35-day occupation of Hostomel.
