  • A Russian soldier broke into the home of an unarmed civilian in Brovary, Ukraine, and raped the victim's wife
  • He has been identified, and a request for his detention has been filed in court
  • Russian forces occupying the Ukrainian cities of Kherson and Irpin have also been accused of raping women

A Russian soldier broke into a Ukrainian home and killed its owner before he and another soldier raped the victim's wife, Ukraine's top prosecutor said late Tuesday.

The soldier, who was not named, entered a home in one of the villages in Ukraine's Brovary district and shot the residence's unarmed civilian owner, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova revealed in a Facebook post.

The soldier and his colleague then repeatedly raped the murdered man’s wife, who was with her minor child, according to Venediktova.

The woman was allegedly threatened with violence as well as weapons during the incident. The soldier also threatened her child, the prosecutor general said.

Prosecutors in Kyiv have since identified the Russian soldier, and he has been reported "on suspicion of violation of laws and customs of war," Venediktova said.

The soldier has been declared wanted, and a request for his detention has been filed in court, according to the Ukrainian prosecutor general.

"Let's find every villain and make [them] accountable throughout the strictness of the law!" Venediktova concluded her statement.

It is not clear if the second soldier involved in the alleged rape has been identified.

Venediktova, in an earlier post, said that her office's prosecutors were still "obtaining testimonies from witnesses and victims who fled theatres of war and who have a firsthand information about war crimes committed by [the Russian Federation]."

News of the incident in Brovary, which is the first rape case involving a Russian soldier to be investigated by authorities in Ukraine, came as Russia's troops were also accused of raping women in an occupied Ukrainian city.

Aside from allegedly raping the women of Irpin, Russian soldiers were also accused of entering private homes in the city and either shooting the inhabitants or kicking them out of their residences.

"They rape women and the dead are just being dumped. They open the basements where people are hiding and shoot them," Anastasia Taran, a 30-year-old evacuee from Irpin, claimed.

Similar accusations were made by residents of Kherson, the first major Ukrainian city to be occupied by Russian forces.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba previously claimed that there have been "numerous cases" of Russian soldiers committing rape in occupied cities.
