‘Sabrina The Teenage Witch’ Reboot: Who Should Star In ‘Riverdale’ Companion Series?
Another Archie character is coming to The CW. A “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” TV show is in the works for next year, but this definitely won’t resemble the ABC sitcom.
“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is set to be a companion series of The CW’s other dark teen drama, “Riverdale.” The new show will be an origin story for the teenage witch and follow her journey as she tries to balance her mortal half with her witch half, Entertainment Weekly reports. The show is expected to take inspiration from horror movies like “The Exorcist” and “Rosemary’s Baby.”
The show is based not on the original Sabrina comics but instead the comic series Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa started in October 2014. “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” took place in the 1960s and chronicled Sabrina turning 16, when she had to decide if she wanted to be a mortal or a witch.
Aguirre-Sacasa, who also produces “Riverdale,” will write the pilot, and Lee Toland Krieger will direct.
It isn’t clear how much the show will follow the comics or if it would be a period show. Many reports make it clear that although Sabrina is an Archie Comics character, it doesn’t sound like “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is a direct spinoff of “Riverdale.”
All we really know is that there will be a blonde teenager at the forefront. While Melissa Joan Hart looks fabulous, she can’t exactly pass as a 16-year-old anymore. These up and coming actresses, however, just might be perfect.
Sabrina Carpenter — After playing the tortured Maya on “Girl Meets World” for three seasons, Carpenter has shown that she can handle emotional storylines and comedic one-liners. Though the “Thumbs” singer has recently been focusing on her music, with her tour wrapped and no major movies or TV shows announced after she wraps “The Hate U Give,” it might be the perfect time for her to take on the horror series. Plus, she already has the name.
Dove Cameron — The “Descendants” actress definitely has the right look to play the teenage witch. That’s probably part of why Cameron has long been rumored to appear on “Riverdale” as Sabrina.
“Yeah, I’d definitely be open to it,” Cameron told Shine on Media when asked about the reports. “I love the character Sabrina, obviously. I was a huge fan of the original Archie Comics. That was like all I read when I was little.”
Fans even thought she might be hinting at guest appearance earlier this month when she posted a frame of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Kiernan Shipka — The 17-year-old has long been a supporting actress on great shows like “Mad Men” and “Feud,” but it might finally be time for Shipka to lead a series. It sounds like the actress would love the tone of “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.” While promoting her scary movie “The Blackcoat’s Daughter,” Shipka revealed to Nylon that she loves horror flicks like “The Shining” and “Rosemary’s Baby.”
Don’t expect any casting announcements right away. The series just went into development for the 2018-19 season on The CW. That likely means that filming for a potential pilot is still months away.
