Salma Hayek Reveals How Harvey Weinstein Bullied Her
Salma Hayek recalled when she was filming a biography based on Mexican painter Frida Kahlo's life, Harvey Weinstein - who served as a producer for the movie titled "Frida" - bullied the actress for looking "ugly."
The 55-year-old actress opened up about the making of the movie with The Guardian on Wednesday and recalled how Weinstein screamed at her, "Why do you have a [monobrow] and mustache? I didn’t hire you to look ugly!"
Hayek revealed that she came up with a witty answer and asked, "But didn’t you ever look at a picture of Frida Kahlo?' If a man was playing Cyrano de Bergerac, he wouldn’t say, 'What’s with the nose?'"
"Frida" was released in 2002. The movie was directed by Julie Taymor and it also stars Alfred Molina, Ashley Judd, Antonio Banderas and Edward Norton.
During the interview, Hayek also reflected on Weinstein's sexual advances, noting that "I didn’t just say no. I’m a force to be recognized. He never saw me weak. It’s not that I’m not afraid, but you’re not going to see it. I can be almost intimidating in my calm strength."
The actress continued that Weinstein is not the "first or last one" who bullied her. She noted that in general, girls need to learn how to be brave. The actress also acknowledged the fact that it is "not easy, but you have to."
Moreover, she noted that there are still men working in Hollywood who harass and bully women. Although the actress explained that one of her strengths is that she doesn’t hold a grudge against the person and believes that people can change.
"I’m not interested in shaming anyone," she added. "I just want it to stop."
Hayek further reflected on racism in Hollywood, noting that it comes hand in hand with harassment. "When they disrespect your background, they feel you’re weaker and they prey on weakness," she explained.
On the work front, Hayek will be seen playing Ajak's character in Marvel's highly anticipated movie, "Eternals," which is releasing Friday. The movie also stars Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari and Kit Harington as Black Knight.
She will also feature in another highly anticipated movie, "House of Gucci," which is slated to release on Nov. 24.
