Sam Heughan's Movie ‘Bloodshot’ Will Release On Digital Early After Coronavirus Closes Theaters
“Outlander” fans have been a bit disappointed that they don’t get to see Sam Heughan on the big screen. “Bloodshot” was released in theaters March 13, just as recommendations for social distancing began. However, it seems like Heughan fans are in luck as Sony has decided to let them watch it from the safety of their own homes.
“Bloodshot” will be available for digital purchase and On Demand viewing from March 24. Sony’s Columbia Pictures confirmed the news to the Hollywood Reporter.
Heughan plays the bad guy in “Bloodshot.” The Valiant comic book adaptation follows Ray Garrison (Vin Diesel), a soldier brought back from the dead with nanotechnology and manipulated into becoming an assassin. Heughan plays Jimmy Dalton, a man who is also part of the experiments on soldiers. He lost his legs and was given an exo-skeleton.
“[Jimmy] feels angry at a lot of things. He’s obviously upset that this has happened to him,” Heughan previously explained. “He blames probably a lot of people. He blames the military, he blames Harding for not giving him this opportunity, and blames Ray for taking away everything that he wants, including the technology.”
“Bloodshot” has earned $24.5 million worldwide. It came in second at the box office last weekend, but it still performed below expectations, earning just $9.2 million domestically. Overall, it was the worst box office weekend in 20 years.
That’s why so many studios are ignoring theatrical windows as theaters shut down for social distancing. Similarly, “The Hunt” and “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” will also join “Bloodshot” by releasing early on digital after the coronavirus crisis shut down theaters.
Meanwhile, “Trolls World Tour” has already announced that the film will go straight to On Demand and digital on April 10, the date it was supposed to open in theaters.
“Bloodshot” is produced by Sony’s Columbia Pictures. Heughan balanced training for the film with shooting Starz’s “Outlander,” which is produced by Sony Pictures Television.
