Samsung Galaxy S5 Rumors: Bigger, Higher Resolution AMOLED Screen, 64-Bit CPU Rumored; Galaxy Note 4 May Follow Suit

Samsung’s (KRX:005935) next-generation Galaxy S smartphone, dubbed the Galaxy S5, is expected to get a number of key hardware enhancements, including a bigger and higher resolution AMOLED screen, and a more powerful 64-bit processor, according to the latest rumors that surfaced online on Tuesday.

Based on a presentation from Samsung Display’s CEO, Kinam Kim, at the company’s Analyst Day event earlier this month, Phone Arena reported that the South Korean tech giant could introduce Super AMOLED phone displays with 560ppi in 2014.

According to the report, such a high-resolution display is likely to be featured on the upcoming Galaxy S5 with a 5.3-inch screen size at 2600x1440 resolutions. In comparison, the existing Galaxy S4 features a 5-inch display at 1080x1920 resolutions (441ppi).

On Tuesday, another report from Korea Herald suggested that Samsung’s upcoming flagship smartphones could be powered by ARM-powered 64-bit processors next year.

“Executives from Samsung and ARM had a meeting today. They discussed the ARM 64-bit chip, which is expected to be used in Samsung’s smartphone next year,” Korea Herald quoted “a senior manager” ARM as saying.

Although the official did not mention any particular device, a report from SamMobile said that the first Samsung phone to get the 64-Bit CPU could be the Galaxy S5 as the company would want to offset Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5s in one of its significant features.

The anonymous ARM official also said that a 128-bit processor could be introduced for Samsung smartphones in the next two years.

“As technology moves from, for example, shifting to face recognition on smartphones from the fingerprint scanner to unlock an iPhone, it requires more powerful memory capacity,” the official said.

According to a report from Unwired View, if Samsung follows its typical release schedule, the Galaxy S5 with a 64-bit CPU could hit the market in early Spring next year. However, if the new processor does not get ready by that time, the Galaxy Note 4 could be the first Samsung handset to get the new 64-bit Howeber, Hprocessor in September 2014.

Rumors also have it that the Galaxy S5 could feature a 16-megapixel ISOCELL sensor. The new camera technology is expected to allow for better low-light photography while also producing images with superior color reproduction, sharpness and richness, compared to BSI technology.
