Samsung Galaxy S8, Note 8: Dual Screen Display Rumored
The Samsung Galaxy S8 has already been rumored to have a bezel-less, pressure sensitive display, but a new rumor about the upcoming smartphone indicates that the company might be working on two new flexible display smartphones which might be completely different from each other.
Samsung is said to be working on a “two-track” strategy for its next flagship devices — the S8 and the Note 8. The company is rumored to be developing a ‘dual-screen’ smartphone with two displays — one on the front and one on the back of the device — and another smartphone with a foldable OLED display. It is expected to examine market responses for the dual-screen smartphone first by pushing out small numbers of the device and then introduce its foldable smartphones. Displays for the dual-screen smartphone are expected to be supplied by Japan Display Inc.
This is not the first time that Samsung would experiment with different kind of displays — the company released the Galaxy Round curved smartphone in 2013 and the Galaxy Note Edge with an edge display in 2014. The foldable display is something Samsung has had in the works for a long time. The display panel itself would be bendable. The company released a video in 2013 showing an “in-foldable” smartphone in which the panel would be folded inwards but the upcoming smartphone is expected to be “out-foldable”. In an out-foldable device, OLED panels are placed on sides that would make the front and the back after being folded. Further, the side edge of the folded device will also have a display, like Samsung's Edge devices.
“In-foldable smartphone is seen as a first type of a foldable smartphone. Out-foldable smartphone is the next step of in-foldable smartphone,” Korean website ETnews reported Thursday, quoting a Samsung executive.
The company is expected to come out with dual-screen/foldable flagships Galaxy S8 and Note 8 in 2017.
