San Francisco Police Shoot Carjacking Suspect After Bizarre Incident Near Airport
A police officer in San Francisco shot and wounded a man who allegedly tried to steal two cars near the city's airport Sunday. The man, whose name was not immediately released, was hospitalized and in stable condition after the incident, local news outlets reported.
San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr said the suspect attempted and failed to take at least two cars near Highway 101 near the San Francisco airport, KPIX, San Francisco reported. The man is accused of stealing and crashing one vehicle then trying to flee in another car. He then panicked and tried to flee the scene before hiding with a backpack in a small group of bushes, police said.
The suspect then allegedly emerged from the bushes and rushed at police. He was shot in the abdomen after refusing to stop his run toward them. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. local time, police said.
“One of the officers could hear the suspect saying, 'Shoot me. Shoot me,” Suhr told a news conference.
The officer was not injured in the shooting but will be placed on routine paid administrative leave while the incident is investigated.
