After San Jose police issued an Amber Alert early Monday, a 2-year-old girl was found safe after being abducted by her father. Victor Magana, 24, and his daughter, Bethanie Carraza, were found in San Luis Obispo County, California.

San Jose Police Sergeant Enrique Garcia confirmed the safe recovery of Carraza and that Magana had been taken into police custody. Garcia did not elaborate on what motives Magana may have had for his actions.

“The child is safe — that was our primary concern,” Garcia said in a statement.

Magana abducted his young daughter overnight after stabbing her mother, who is his girlfriend. Police initially responded to reports of a screaming woman and found the mother with one stab wound. She was transported to the hospital with what police described as life-threatening injuries. Her name has not been released.

The public was urged to look out for the two in a light green 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe.

Magana was eventually found when he was recognized at a gas station. To prevent him from fleeing before police arrived, people at the station used their cars to block Magana’s exit.
