Sarah Ferguson Will Try To Redeem Herself At Eugenie's Wedding, Says Expert
Sarah Ferguson's scandal is still remembered by many today.
The Duchess of York has made "seismic effort" to get back into the royal fold. However, her toegate scandal is not easy to forget. "Sarah Ferguson has made a seismic effort to regain some of the royal favour she so catastrophically lost," Richard Fitzwilliams said (as quoted by Express). "This wedding is her chance to excel and she will be seated with the family. No one has forgotten the past, but on this occasion she will be feted as the mother of the bride."
Ferguson's relationship with the royals ended when she was photographed in a scandalous situation with her financial advisor, John Bryan. According to royal experts, this was the cause of Ferguson and Prince Andrew's divorce.
In her famous toegate scandal photos, she was wearing a bikini in a garden in the south of France, and he appeared to be "sucking her toes," royal biographer Penny Juror said in the documentary.
"She was at Balmoral when those photographs came out. The family came down for breakfast and there was Fergie in this shocking scene and that was the end," she noted.
Royal commentator Dickie Arbiter also criticized Ferguson for making a scene when she was already married at that time. "Okay you don't expect somebody to crawl through the bushes to take photographs of you topless while your financial advisor is sucking your toes," Arbiter told ITV's "The Royal Wives of Windsor." "You don't expect that but by the same token you don't go away with somebody that isn't your husband and sunbathe topless."
Ferguson admitted that she regretted her poor choices. In fact, she was not invited to Prince William and Kate Middleton's royal wedding in 2011. She confessed that she watched the event on TV and it made her do some soul-searching.
Over the years, Ferguson's relationship with the royals has improved. She even scored an invite to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding. In addition, she is expected to return to the royal fold at Princess Eugenie's royal wedding.
For the upcoming royal wedding, Fitzwilliams believes that Ferguson will pay tribute to the late Princess of Wales to please her nephews, Prince Harry and Prince William.
"Sarah may well pay a tribute to Diana," Fitzwilliams said. "They were famously friendly though they subsequently fell out. She might choose a hymn which Diana was fond of such as 'I Vow To Thee My Country' which was sung at Diana's wedding and funeral."
