The 'Saw' Reboot: New Title And Poster Revealed After Early Trailer Leaked
The creators of the new “Saw” movie just revealed the poster for the film along with its official title, “Spiral: From the Book of Saw.” This comes just one day after the official first trailer had leaked on Reddit.
The poster shows a stoplight with the iconic and titular red spiral. Behind it, Rock’s detective character stands on a dark and empty road with a color pallet that resembles Jigsaw himself.
The spiral, in question, is a staple in the “Saw” franchise. Jigsaw, a serial killer and master tinkerer, is obsessed with puzzles and the image of the spiral. The tricycle riding puppet he plays the role has spirals painted on its cheeks. The spiral symbol represents the labyrinth or journey of these puzzles while doubling as a symbol of descent. It becomes the killer’s calling card of sorts.
Following shortly after the small info dump came the officially released first trailer, shown in higher resolution. “Spiral,” which is labeled as a reboot rather than the prequel it appears to be, gives us our first look at Chris Rock’s character, Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks, and his partner (Max Minghella) on the hunt for what is behind these strange spiral symbols and how they’re linked to these gruesome “Saw”-like murders. This is a rare dramatic turn for the comedic actor, who also acts as producer for the film.
The trailer also reveals actor Samuel L. Jackson’s police veteran who seems to on the criminal mastermind's trail. Their involvement with the case takes them deeper and deeper into the game itself, eventually becoming part of it.
The trailer ends with an image that brings the “Saw-ga” full circle: Rock’s character, chained up in a dingy dungeon by his leg, holding a bone saw. This is the very first thing that sparked the audience’s attention with the first film back in 2006 when Cary Elwes’s character had no choice but to saw his own leg off to escape.
The poster for “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” also reveals the release date to be May 15.
