Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures recently surprised "Saw" fans everywhere when they announced that a reimagining of the film series was in the works with Chris Rock playing a key role in the newest creation. The pairing piqued the interest of a lot of horror fanatics, but at that time, details were sparse. That all changed this week when it was announced that production is soon slated to begin on the new film.

On Tuesday, a door was cracked into what was going on with the new film when director Darren Bousman tweeted that shooting would begin in a matter of days.

Rock, who is known for his stand-up comedy, divulged that he has been a long-time fan of the series since 2004. "I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place," he said in a press release that was issued when the movie was announced.

"When Chris Rock came to us and described in chilling detail his fantastic vision that reimagines and spins-off the world of the notorious Jigsaw Killer, we were all-in," stated Lionsgate's Motion Picture chairman Joe Drake. Continuing, he said, "... it will be completely reverential to the legacy of the brand with his wit, creative vision and passion for this classic horror franchise," according to Comicbook.com.

In a recent Instagram Story, Rock, 54, assured fans that it would not be a "Scary Movie"-type comedy. "It's gonna be 'Saw,' don't worry," he revealed.

James Wan and Leigh Whannel, the original creators of the series, will be serving as executive producers, along with Daniel Heffner. Bousman is the planned director behind the project, with Mark Burg and Oren Koules also producing. The script is being written penned by Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg, but it is based on a story that was conceived by Rock, who is also set to star in the upcoming movie.

The new "Saw" film is set to arrive in theaters on Oct. 23, 2020.
