“Scandal” Season 6, episode 1 has not yet even aired, but ABC has already dropped the official synopsis for episode 2.

In “Hard Ball,” the shocking results of the election will be announced, and a new president takes over the White House. A series of flashbacks will reveal what happened during the campaign trail. Olivia Pope’s (Kerry Washington) not-so-good deeds to make sure that her candidate, Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young), wins will also be exposed.

Elsewhere, President Fitzgerald Grant (Tony Goldwyn) will soon leave his post as the president of the United States. But just a few weeks before the turnover takes place, he and Abby (Darby Stanchfield) will be faced with an unprecedented national crisis. Additionally, the Gladiators will also seek answers for something that will happen in the premiere episode.

Meanwhile, “Scandal” executive producer Shonda Rhimes recently spoke with TV Guide at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. According to the exec, Season 6 will be very different from the first five seasons because the upcoming episodes will be centered mostly on the main characters' current conditions. “We’ve watched them descend from any moral high ground they could have possibly had to the lowest depths,” she said.

Goldwyn seconded Rhimes’ statement, saying that Season 6 will have a new direction to it. “Shonda’s taking the show in a new fresh direction, but the fact that it’s in counterpoint to this crazy political world that America is living through is interesting, but they’re not the same. Season 6 is not in reaction to that,” he said.

“Scandal” Season 6 was supposed to premiere on ABC on Jan. 19, but it was moved to Jan. 26 at 9 p.m. EST to give way to the special airing of Donald Trump’s arrival at the White House.
