Eleven children were stabbed in Guangxi, China, Wednesday, after a knife-wielding man attacked a kindergarten. Five of the kids were seriously injured. None of the children suffered life-threatening injuries, according to a statement from the Pingxiang municipal information office.

The region of Guangxi, in southeastern China, is roughly an hour-and-a-half plane ride west from Hong Kong, which is located on China’s eastern seaboard. It is largely a geographically mountainous and agrarian part of the country, which had a population of roughly 46 million people, according to a 2010 government population census.

The man who performed the attacked was reportedly vengeful. He was identified as Qin Peng'an. Qin snuck into the school in the afternoon and stabbed the children while they were eating lunch. He managed to get on the campus after he told staff members at Xiaocongzai Kindergarten that he was picking up his child from the school.

Two teachers responded to the assailant by fighting back with plastic chairs until local police arrived at the scene and incarcerated him. He remains in police custody.

Qin performed the attack because he felt bullied while living in the largely rural village and elected to take out his rage on the school children as revenge, the statement said based on the initial police report.

School attacks are not new in China. A man in the southern island province of Hainan stabbed 10 pupils in February before killing himself, CNN reported. None of the children were killed.

A man stabbed eight primary school students and a teacher in September 2014 in central China before taking his own life by jumping off of a building. He allegedly performed the attack after his daughter had been barred from attending the school over failing to complete a homework assignment during the summer. Three of the children died.

Twenty-three elementary school students were stabbed in the Henan province by a man while they were trying to flee from the campus. None of the pupils were killed, CNN reported on Dec. 24, 2012. The incident occurred on Dec. 14, 2016, the same day Adam Lanza, a 20-year-old American gunman killed 20 children and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut with a semiautomatic rifle.

There were seven separate reported attacks at Chinese schools between March 2010 and December 2012.
