School Bus Driver Shot In The Head While Children Were Inside Vehicle
A driver of a school bus was shot in the head in Minneapolis while children were still inside the vehicle. Officials said the driver is expected to recover from the incident.
Police were called to the scene of the shooting in the city’s Camden neighborhood at around 2.15 p.m. Wednesday. The Minneapolis Police Department said that officers found the bus driver with a gunshot wound to his head. They also found three students at the scene. The children were all below the age of 10 and were inside the bus when the shooting took place, according to KSTP.
The students were unharmed in the incident. The police department said the injury sustained by the driver was not life-threatening. Officers at the scene provided assistance to the driver until paramedics arrived.
He was then taken to the hospital where he was joined by his family members, according to Metropolitan Transportation Network, which is the company that operates the bus. The company said it got in touch with police and confirmed that all the three children from the bus were safely taken home.
A search for the shooter is currently underway. No arrests have been made so far.
The incident took place on the heels of another shooting incident, where a teenage boy was shot in north Minneapolis. The teenage victim from the North Community High School was taken to the hospital in grave condition.
Ward 4 City Council Member LaTrisha Vetaw told WCCO that parents shouldn’t have to worry about their child’s safety when they send their kids to school.
“As parents, you give [your children] up. You send them to school, and they should come home the way you sent them,” Vetaw told the outlet.
Minneapolis Public Schools released a statement Wednesday in light of the two shootings that took place less than two hours apart.
“Our MPS community is grieving tonight after one of our students and one of our bus drivers were the victims of gun violence in two separate incidents,” read the statement on Twitter. “Investigations are currently underway and until we have more information, we are not sharing specifics.”
“For now, we recognize the deep impact this has on our students, staff and families,” the statement added. “Our thoughts tonight are especially with the victims’ families during this difficult time.”
