KEY POINTS

  • The Seahawks continue to eye Jimmy Garoppolo from the 49ers
  • Drew Lock was acquired in the Russell Wilson trade to the Denver Broncos
  • Seattle might play the waiting game in acquiring Garoppolo though

The Seattle Seahawks made the decision to sever ties with Super Bowl-winning quarterback Russell Wilson after spending 10 seasons under center by trading him to the Denver Broncos in exchange for fellow quarterback Drew Lock, defensive lineman Shelby Harris and tight end Noah Fant.

It was later revealed that trading Wilson became inevitable after teammates said that he “checked out” at some point in the season, according to a joint report by Michael-Shawn Dugar, Jayson Jenks and Mike Sando of The Athletic.

While Lock is still a serviceable quarterback in his fourth NFL season, the Seahawks definitely could use an upgrade if they want to enter the playoffs.

Larry Stone of the Seattle Times believes that San Francisco 49ers star Jimmy Garoppolo just might be the solution to all of their problems.

Noting head coach and executive vice president of football operations Pete Carroll’s statements about trading Wilson as anything but a step back, Stone argued the Garoppolo as a worthwhile get.

However, he was also quick to mention that it might not be as easy after all.

“It would be a complicated transaction, which means there’s no guarantee that it can be pulled off. For starters, no way the 49ers would trade Garoppolo to a division rival and risk having him burn them twice a year,” Stone wrote.

“But the good news is that there’s a strong belief the 49ers will eventually release Garoppolo, perhaps by the end of the month. And at that point, he will be free to negotiate with teams.”

Garoppolo trade speculation certainly was a hot topic for much of the summer as the 49ers are expected to start Trey Lance after having two starts when the former dealt with injury.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported earlier in the week that Garoppolo is on track with his recovery after undergoing shoulder surgery in the offseason and that the Seahawks are exploring deals internally for him.

“They [Seahawks] were sort of implicated in the Baker Mayfield situation, didn’t make that move. I’m told that internally, they have discussed the possibility of Garoppolo playing for them,” he said.

“They’ve done their film work to see how he would fit, tricky certainly to do a trade inside the NFC West. Seattle knows they can sort of, maybe wait this out because the 49ers have limited cap space right now.”

Fowler mentioned San Francisco’s plans of resigning both wide receiver Deebo Samuel and defensive end Nick Bosa, which allows the Seahawks to bide their time and let it all play out.

Getting Garoppolo from a division rival certainly is going to be a massive coup for the Seahawks and ensures they have a high-quality play caller in the post-Wilson era.
