Serena Williams Reveals Something Deeper About Thirst For Another Title
KEY POINTS
- Serena Williams believes she still has a lot to prove to herself as a professional
- She has lost four consecutive Grand Slam finals
- The 23-time Grand Slam winner's coach confirmed her goal to win again in 2021
Serena Williams’ latest hint at her desire to claim another title is fueled by something that means more to her than being an athlete.
Despite already having cemented her name in the list of all-time greats, Williams is still aiming for a 24th career Grand Slam title. The 39-year-old has been wanting to add the prestigious accolade to her name after losing four consecutive Grand Slam finals.
With the 2020 season now over, Williams is currently enjoying some time off with her daughter, Olympia. However, the tennis phenom suggested that despite all her achievements, she hasn't reached her peak yet and will continue to prove that she’s more than just an exceptional athlete.
"I’m still looking for those moments, I never really felt like I made it to that moment,” Williams recently said on “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” “I have always felt like I am still growing to that place.”
"I never really understand what I’m doing or what I’ve done, like I don’t really look and think,” she continued. “So I still feel like I am in this place where I’m still living and trying to make the best of each moment. That’s kind of how I have always approached my life, my career and my job and, I just never really think about it like that."
A 24th major, a feat which would also see her at the top of the Margaret Court rankings, is still a priority for Williams. Confirming her future plans, her longtime coach and mentor Patrick Mouratoglou earlier revealed that his pupil hopes to put an end to her drought in 2021.
"Serena's goals have not changed since she came back to tennis after giving birth,” Mouratoglou exclusively told Olympic Channel last month. “She still feels that she can win Grand Slams.”
“If she can have some Olympic gold medals, she would be extremely happy, too, because that's also a great achievement for any athlete in any sport,” the coach added. “(But) the last three years were disappointing because even though she reached four Grand Slam finals, she was not able to win one.”
Mouratoglou has always been impressed by Williams' work ethic. For the Frenchman, the former WTA no. 1 player is one of the elite athletes who have learned to live by the "champion" mentality he has been infusing his pupils with for years.
"Champions have a different mindset," the coach pointed out. "Champions think like champions. Champions never look behind them. They always, whatever they achieve, they forget it the second after and they look at the future: ‘What's next? What's my next goal?’”
