KEY POINTS

  • "Sex/Life" has been creating a lot of buzz for its steamy sex scenes
  • Adam Demos and co-star Sarah Shahi are an item in real life
  • The two worked with an intimacy coordinator while filming their sex scenes for the series

“Sex/Life” star Adam Demos has revealed how he filmed sex scenes with his real-life girlfriend and on-screen partner Sarah Shahi for the Netflix drama series.

“Sex/Life” has been creating a lot of buzz due to its powerful and passionate sex scenes. But according to Demos, their sex scenes were "not all that sexy" to shoot. “It’s not, I mean, hopefully it looks convincing, but it’s so mechanical, it’s ridiculous,” Demos said during his recent guesting on “The Kyle & Jackie o Show” podcast.

Demos said it was “a bit of a turn off” filming their sex scenes with the filming crew around, saying: “People ask if you get carried away, but you’ve got sound guys and cameraman right around you with the big beards.”

Demos went on to reveal that Shahi was not nude while he was filming. “No, not at all,” he said, adding: “It’s a closed set, but you’ve got modesty… I look like a Ken doll, which is embarrassing.”

In a separate interview with Collider, however, “Sex/Life” creator Stacy Rukeyser said Demos was actually nude in some of his steamiest moments in the series, particularly in the controversial shower scene.

“That’s not a body double,” she said, adding: “I mean, people usually ask is it real or is it a prosthetic? And I can tell you what Adam Demos says about it, which is, a gentleman never tells. So, we are leaving that up to the viewer’s imagination.”

Shahi previously told Fox that she and Demos had to work with an intimacy coordinator on set to make sure that everyone on the set felt safe and respected while they were shooting their bed scenes. “It was my first time working with an intimacy coordinator, and I felt like it was an important thing, especially with the show that had this many sex scenes,” she said.

Shahi also defended the many sex scenes in the show, saying they were not just “gratuitous sex scenes” and that they were vital in the story. “These sex scenes really are sort of informing the character’s emotional state,” she said. “They become an integral part of the storyline itself.”

“Sex/Life” consists of eight episodes and is inspired by the novel “44 Chapters about 4 Men” by B.B. Easton, which explores female sexuality. It is currently being streamed on Netflix.
