Merriam-Webster dictionary has added new words such as 'f-bomb' and 'sexting' Wikipedia

A year after the words "tweet," "bromance" and "cougar" were added to Merriam-Webster, the latest additions this year are even more diverse.

Merriam-Webster leads the dictionary market, it's president, John Morse, told the Associated Press.

Each year, the privately held company chooses around 100 additions for the 114-year-old dictionary's annual update, gathering evidence of usage over several years in everything from media to the labels of beer bottles and boxes of frozen food, according to the Associated Press.

After tracking the following words for years, the company has added "f-bomb," "sexting" and "man cave" to the dictionary, just to name a few.

Sexting is defined as the sending of sexually explicit messages or images by cellphone. It was only a matter of time before the term was officially added to the dictionary, as the act has gotten plenty of celebrities in trouble over the past several years. Everyone from singers Chris Brown, Rihanna, and Miley Cyrus, to politicians Louis Magazzu and Anthony Weiner have been caught sending explicit photos of themselves to their lovers.

"F-bomb," on the other hand, has appeared in newspapers for over 20 years, but is just making it into the mainstream dictionary. Kory Stamper, an associate editor for Merriam-Webster, told the Associated Press that and her fellow word spies traced it back to 1988, in a Newsday story that had late Mets catcher Gary Carter talking about how he had given them up, along with other profanities.

"We saw another huge spike after Dick Cheney dropped an F-bomb in the Senate in 2004," and again in 2010 when Vice President Joe Biden did the same thing in the same place. It's a word that is very visually evocative. It's not just the F-word. It's F-bomb. You know that it's going to cause a lot of consternation and possible damage," Stamper went on to say.

Additional words that will now be in Merriam-Webster dictionary include:

-aha moment noun (1939): a moment of sudden realization, inspiration, insight, recognition or comprehension

-bucket list noun (2006): a list of things that one has not done before but wants to do before dying

-man cave noun (1992): a room or space (as in a basement) designed according to the taste of the man of the house to be used as his personal area for hobbies and leisure activities
