Shailene Woodley Reflects On ‘Fake News’ Benefits As STX Acquires Thriller
Although Shailene Woodley is aware that her career as a famous actress comes with plenty of pros and cons, she admitted that she occasionally enjoys reading “fake news” about her life.
In an interview with Unilad published Monday, the 28-year-old actress revealed that she has previously been entertained by some of the gossip news published about her. “One time there was a very long period of time where the world was convinced I was married to my best friend and that we’d been together for years,” she explained.
“I was okay with that one though, probably because I was the one who set her up with her husband, but it was pretty fun.”
Woodley shared that she and the couple also got a kick out of seeing the story spin out of control. “Oh yeah, we all did. I do like some fake news stories because they give you something to play with, and it’s fuel for the prank fire,” she said.
Woodley’s comments come on the heels of Deadline’s report that STXfilms has won the U.S. rights to her untitled legal thriller formerly known as “Prisoner 760.”
The Kevin Macdonald-directed flick follows the true story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi, who was detained in the U.S. for over 14 years without being charged. The movie is based on Slahi’s New York Times best-selling memoir “Guantánamo Diary.”
The film stars Jodie Foster as Slahi’s (Tahar Rahim) defense attorney Nancy Hollander and Woodley as her associate Teri Duncan. The story will detail the obstacles they faced as they fought for Slahi’s release.
“We are proud to partner with 30WEST, Topic Studios, and BBC Films on this extraordinary and important true story. The film features memorable performances by Jodie Foster, Tahar Rahim, Shailene Woodley, who we have the pleasure of working with again, and Benedict Cumberbatch,” Adam Fogelson, chairman of the Motion Picture Group for STXfilms, said in a statement Monday.
“Kevin has made a powerful and thought-provoking drama and a great legal thriller that we are excited to share with audiences in the U.S. and around the world through our international distribution partners.”
