Shakira Lawsuit: Judge Blocks Ex-Boyfriend From Accessing Bank Account
Colombian pop sensation Shakira scored a major legal victory when a judge in Geneva barred her ex-boyfriend from accessing her Swiss bank account. Antonio de La Rua, 39, claimed he should have access to the account because it contains most of the assets gained as a result of their business relationship, according to the Associated Press. De La Rua alleged he and Shakira, 36, had an oral agreement that he would continue to oversee her business interests after their August 2010 breakup. The judge ruled that de La Rua did not have sufficient evidence to prove that such an agreement existed, and Shakira was named the sole owner of the account.
“In a fifteen-page well-reasoned opinion, the Swiss court dismissed all of Mr. de la Rua’s claims that he was entitled to any participation in Shakira’s past, current or future business, brand or assets, including future income,” Shakira’s attorney, Ezequiel Camerini, said in a statement to E News. Camerini also said the former couple had a “prenuptial-type agreement applicable to unmarried couples” wherein they “expressly manifested their wish to conserve, each separately, the totality of their past, current and future assets.”
“Just so you know, I am not Shakira’s partner in coquito or any of her other companies. We have everything very neatly, and she is the sole owner and beneficiary of her companies,” reads an email allegedly sent by de La Rua to Shakira’s mother, according to the New York Daily News.
“I am not a partner in any of your companies. You are the sole owner of all of them,” reads another email purportedly sent to Shakira that same week.
The ruling is the latest salvo in what is shaping up to be a major legal battle. De La Rua filed a $100 million lawsuit against Shakira in April, seeking a cut of the profits from their business relationship that ended in October 2011. In the filing, hosted by the Hollywood Reporter, de La Rua specifically claims to be the driving force behind Shakira’s lucrative deal with Live Nation allegedly worth $300 million. According to AP, de La Rua also filed lawsuits in New York and Los Angeles.
De La Rua is the son of former Argentinian President Fernando de La Rua. He dated Shakira from 2000 until August 2010. Shortly after the breakup, Shakira began dating Spanish soccer star Gerard Pique. She gave birth to their son in January.
