KEY POINTS
- “Shang-Chi” outperformed “Black Widow’s” $25.8 million second week ticket sales
- The Simu Liu-starrer has so far earned $145.6 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters
- Ryan Reynolds’ “Free Guy” came second after pocketing $5.8 million in its fifth week in theaters
“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is still holding on to the top spot of the North American box office after collecting $35.8 million in its second weekend.
The PG-13 superhero standalone continued its reign at the box office for the second week in a row after securing big ticket sales in the 4,300 theaters where it is currently being shown across North America.
The Simu Liu-starrer has now outperformed “Black Widow’s” $25.8 million second-week sales, becoming the largest second weekend box office performer since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Compared to its performance during its opening weekend, however, “Shang-Chi” saw a significant drop from its $90 million ticket sales. Nevertheless, the film's cumulative $145.6 million earnings in the domestic box office is still an impressive feat on its own.
In terms of global sales, “Shang-Chi” has already garnered $257.6 million, and it is expected to pass the $400 million mark by the end of its run in cinemas, according to CNET.
This is good news for the Marvel feature, which had a theater-only release, unlike other big movies such as “Black Widow,” “Mulan” and “Raya and the Last Dragon” that had simultaneous streaming releases.
Coming in second place is Ryan Reynolds’ “Free Guy,” which pocketed $5.8 million and finally crossed the $100 million mark at the domestic box office. Its cumulative gross is at $101.8 million after being in theaters for five weeks.
Globally, the comedy-action film has now grossed $276.6 million — $76.3 million of which comes from China, making it the third highest-grossing motion picture in the country since theaters there reopened in July 2020, Deadline reported.
The Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema offering “Malignant” came in third after securing a tepid $5.57 million in its debut weekend. It’s worth noting that the film had a day-and-date premiere in theaters and on HBO Max.
MGM and Universal’s slasher flick “Candyman” landed fourth with $4.8 million in its third week. Rounding out the top five is “The Jungle Cruise,” which raked in $2.4 million after being in domestic theaters for seven weeks.
