Marvel Star Simu Liu 'Laughs' At Critics Who Thought 'Shang-Chi' Would Be A Flop
Chinese-born Canadian actor Simu Liu, whose first Marvel movie was released on the Labor Day weekend, took to Twitter on Tuesday to silence his critics who thought the film would be a flop.
"Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" was released in theaters on Sept. 3. The movie earned $140 million worldwide in the opening weekend. It is the first movie from Marvel Studios with an Asian protagonist.
"Me laughing at the people who thought we'd flop," the 32-year-old actor wrote along with a photo of himself, which was clicked years ago when Liu used to work as a model for iStock.
iStock's official Twitter account replied to the actor's tweet and wrote, "We always believed in you, @simuliu. And if being a super hero doesn't work out, our door is always open."
However, the comment didn't go down well with the actor as he responded, "Is the door open to share in the hundreds of thousands of $$ you made off those photos cause I was paid a hundred bucks."
Many users shared their reactions to Liu's comment.
One person noted that the celebration isn't really required at this point as the movie is yet to reach its break-even mark.
"Dude, I have seen pudding with thicker skin than you," the user wrote. "Yes, your movie broke the Labor day record for release and that is something to celebrate, but the movie needs more money before it breaks even. Chill out, stop attacking Youtubers and get some damn perspective."
Another user wrote, "Budget of $150 million, and it made $140 million worldwide so far. so yeah, it needs a couple more days to break even."
The actor also took a dig at YouTubers who predicted that the first Asian Marvel movie might be a flop at the box office.
Liu shared a collage of such thumbnails on his Instagram Story on Tuesday.
"Shang-Chi" revolves around a criminal organization called "Ten Rings." The action-adventure shows a journey of a martial arts master, who deals with the mysterious organization.
The actor is currently filming "Arthur the King," while another movie, "One True Loves," is under pre-production.
