Simu Liu took the time to thank everyone involved in making "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" on social media after the movie premiered in Theaters Friday.
Liu, 32, made history as the first Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) to lead a film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On the film's premiere day, he shared an artwork on Instagram and penned a lengthy caption thanking the cast members, crew and Disney for making the movie possible.
"The sun rose today to a world where Asian superheroes exist as the leads of their story; that is the gift that @destindaniel and @marvelstudios have bestowed upon all of us, across all communities, everywhere," he wrote. "A celebration and a sharing of culture, of language, of laughter, of excitement, of sorrow and of heartbreak."
He thanked director Destin Daniel Cretton for putting "more work" on the project. He also commended Cretton for his "thoughtfulness, for the dedication and commitment you showed each and every day, for the personal sacrifices you made, and for giving me the opportunity to be a vessel for your story."
Liu also expressed gratitude to his "incredible co-stars" Awkwafina, Benedict Wong, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Michelle Yeoh, Ronny Chieng, Florian "Big Nasty" Munteanu, Sir Ben Kingsley and Tony Leung for allowing "a newbie to occupy space in your world."
"I felt like I was among legends each and every day. Thank you for your patience and generosity. You are all magnificent in this movie," Liu added.
The actor thanked Disney for "throwing the full weight of your platform behind this movie" and digital artist Jarvis for the artwork.
"'I’ve said before that this film will change the world. A smile where there wasn’t one before. Pride where there was shame. Compassion where there was ignorance. If we reach out and touch even one person, then aren’t all of our lives better for it?" he continued.
"And thank you all for your support. Today, finally, we make history," Liu concluded his post.
In August, Liu reacted to Disney CEO Bob Chapek's statement saying "Shang-Chi" was an "interesting experiment" for them to inform them of their actions moving forward after doing a theatrical release for 45 days before bringing it to Disney+.
"We are not an experiment," he tweeted in response to Chapek. "We are the underdog; the underestimated. We are the ceiling-breakers. We are the celebration of culture and joy that will persevere after an embattled year. We are the surprise. I’m fired the f--k up to make history on September 3rd; JOIN US."
"Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" is now in theaters.
