  • A second clip shows drones warning residents: "Do not open the window or sing"

A horrifying video that has been circulating on social media seemed to show the residents of Shanghai, China's largest city, screaming from their apartment balconies and windows due to stringent restrictions that prevent them from stepping out of their homes as part of the country's COVID-19 lockdown measures.

Shanghai entered the second week of COVID-19 lockdown, leaving its 25 million inhabitants imprisoned at home since April 5. The video is said to show frustrated residents screaming at the top of their lungs after not being allowed to leave their houses, even to buy food.

"What the?? This video was taken yesterday in Shanghai, China, by the father of a close friend of mine. She verified its authenticity," Patrick Madrid, an author, and radio host tweeted as he shared the video on April 9. The clip, which received over 4.3 million views, has not been independently verified by International Business Times.

"It’s Shanghai, everyone is screaming, started with a couple now everyone is screaming, after a week of lockdown, something is going to happen, no one knows when this is going to end," the voice in the video said, according to an interpreter, as reported by New.com.au.

Chinese officials, meanwhile, face several criticisms on social media for their zero COVID policy as the residents of Shanghai city are running out of food, water and other necessities. "Shanghai residents are mad as hell, can’t take it anymore. China’s zero covid policy getting dangerous," Ian Bremmer, a political scientist and the president and founder of Eurasia Group wrote Sunday while sharing the video on Twitter.

Meanwhile, another video that surfaced online seemed to show an announcement made using a drone, warning residents to stop protesting. “Please comply with COVID restrictions. Control your soul’s desire for freedom. Do not open the window or sing,” the message from the drone reportedly said, NY Post reported.

Shanghai has reported a record 24,943 new infections as of Sunday accounting for more than 90% of the country's total new cases. During a press conference on the same day in Shanghai, city health official Wu Qianyu said the government "would not relax in the slightest" concerning the lockdown restrictions.
