Shark Week 2017: Monday Schedule Released; What To Watch July 24
Shark Week 2017 is just getting started. While there aren’t any Olympians on Monday night’s programming, all the specials have what fans really want: sharks. The July 24 lineup reveals that great whites won’t be the star of the night (don’t worry, they’ll still be featured). It seems quite a few different species will be examined on the second night of Shark Week. Check out Discovery Channel’s primetime schedule below:
8 p.m EDT — “Shark Vortex”
Every summer, about 30 species of sharks head to New England as water from the Gulf Stream pushes north into southern New England. Experts Greg Skomal and Joe Romeiro study the yearly event. In this Shark Week special, produced by 333 Productions and Radley Studios, they’ll focus on three shark species: makos, great whites and porbeagles. The trio are apparently very talented. They can out-swim, out-think and out-compete the other shark species.
9 p.m EDT — “Return to the Isle of Jaws”
“Return to the Isle of Jaws” will focus on scientists and divers studying a new hot spot for great white sharks south of Western Australia. In the program, produced by Red Rock Films, the experts will make a “startling discovery that causes us to re-think of everything we thought we knew about great whites,” according to a press release.

10 p.m EDT — “Alien Sharks: Stranger Fins”
This edition of “Alien Sharks” will take a break from the great whites to look at some of the weirder shark species. Sawsharks will be explored by Dr. Craig O’Connell, who will go to the Bass Strait for the finned fish. Expert Victoria Elena Vasquez and Dr. David Ebert will head to Tokyo Bay for the goblin shark — but that’s not all they find. The duo will see goblin sharks as well as sawsharks, ghost sharks, frilled sharks and the luminescent lantern shark. This special is produced by Discovery Studios.
11 p.m. EDT — “Shark After Dark”
The Eli Roth-hosted after show will bring in both a comedian and an expert to discuss Monday’s Shark Week programming. Comedian Anthony Jeselnik and marine biologist Vicky Vasquez will discuss the sharks seen in “Alien Sharks: Stranger Fins.” Jeselnik will also play a game where he tests his knowledge of sharks and their habitats.
While Shark Week benefits Discovery Channel greatly, the network is also trying to help their finned friends. The Shark Finbassadors program aims to educate fans about issues sharks face. Top scientists, filmmakers and advocates will try to inform fans via live video Q&As and they’ll be talking over Shark Week’s official Instagram.

Discovery is also teaming up with Oceana again to help sharks. Discovery is “working with other major brands to help raise money for Oceana’s shark conservation efforts, activating shark tagging trips and developing content to educate fans on the importance of sharks in our ecosystem,” according to a press release.
Nina Dobrev (“The Vampire Diaries,” “xXx: The Return of Xander Cage”) is one of the celebrities working with Oceana during Shark Week. Dobrev recently went to Hawaii and the Bahamas to go swimming with the sharks and film informational videos against the trade of shark fins.
